The state of California is currently in the process of transitioning the first phase of children enrolled in the Healthy Families Program (HFP) to the Medi-Cal program.
The state was required to get approval from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which they received on Dec. 31, 2012, in order to transition the children before Jan. 1.
The approval activates “Phase 1a” of the transition, which includes children in the following counties:
- San Bernardino
- San Francisco
- Santa Clara
- San Mateo
- San Diego
Once these beneficiaries transition into the Medi-Cal program, dentists will need to bill Denti-Cal for dental services provided. Dentists who are not enrolled in Denti-Cal, but would like to see their current patients when they transition into that service delivery system, can visit the Denti-Cal website (denti-cal.ca.gov) for the Enrollment Application Guide.
Dentists who currently serve HFP patients who have not yet transitioned, or who are unsure if their patients have transitioned, can check eligibility through their normal HFP processes. If the patient is no longer eligible with HFP, check their Medi-Cal eligibility. (To check Medi-Cal eligibility, call 800.456.2387.)
Denti-Cal has posted several new issues of Denti-Cal Bulletin providing detailed information on the Healthy Families Transition, which can be accessed at denti-cal.ca.gov.
CDA has been actively participating and representing our members and their patients in all of the administration implementation meetings and has held many meetings with the department, legislative leaders and staff and advocates over the last few months regarding the Healthy Families Program transition and the newly developed departmental policies.
CDA will keep members informed as this issue progresses. For more information, please contact Nicette Short at CDA at 916.554.4970.
