Free lectures at The Spot cover regulatory compliance, employment law and more

This September at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry in San Francisco, The Spot Educational Theater will host free one-hour lectures nearly every hour on the hour beginning at 10 a.m. all three days of the convention.

The Spot is a comfortable place where CDA Presents attendees can decompress, charge electronic devices and enjoy educational lessons from seasoned and emerging speakers in dentistry. Among the scheduled lecturers are CDA Practice Support’s four analysts who provide expert guidance in the areas of dental benefits, employment practices, practice management and regulatory compliance.

Employment Practices Analyst Michelle Corbo will give three lectures, including “Ask the Expert: Establishing Your Practice Policies.” In this course, attendees will learn what laws pertain to their practice; techniques to improve policies and procedures in order to comply with current laws; and how to apply best practices to avoid costly mistakes. Corbo, who has supported CDA members for 12 years, will also lead lectures on hiring and firing employees and wage and hour compliance.

Dental Benefits Analyst Cindy Hartwell will lead the lecture “Tips for Efficient Claims Submission,” in which she’ll explain how to properly complete a claim to avoid claim processing issues, as well as how to initiate the provider dispute mechanism as part of the formal appeal process. In a second lecture, Hartwell will cover the changing dental benefits marketplace and how dentists can navigate the marketplace while understanding their rights and reducing risk to the practice.

Practice Analyst Lee Bentz specializes in operational efficiencies, collections, patient protocols and the steps required to start, grow and sell a dental practice. In his lecture “Budget 101,” he’ll explain how to use historical data to influence future practice goals and how to compare  practice expenses to the industry standard. He’ll also explain how to set and communicate clear goals for the entire team. In a second course, Bentz will help attendees understand their practice management reports.

And Regulatory Compliance Analyst Teresa Pichay, who for more than 20 years has assisted CDA members with issues related to HIPAA, environmental health and safety and more, will give two lectures. In “Ask the Expert: Regulatory Compliance” she’ll address the questions she often hears from members regarding California Dental Practice Act compliance, HIPAA, infection control, waste management and radiation safety. Pichay will also take regulatory questions from the audience. Pichay’s second lecture will explain how to conduct a HIPAA risk analysis.

Other speakers at The Spot will present on digital marketing trends, mandated reporting, handling negative online reviews and integrating clear-aligner treatment into the practice.

The Spot is located on the exhibit hall floor in booth 1812. The majority of The Spot’s lectures offer 1 unit of C.E. credit. To receive credit for attending, attendees must scan in with the course host, but contrary to all other lectures at CDA Presents, the hosts will not provide a three-digit code at the end of The Spot lectures.

See The Spot lecture schedule in the CDA Presents program (page 7) and find descriptions of individual lectures at cdapresents.com/sf2018. Check the on-site program for the final schedule.
