Dentists, dental professionals: Registration open for CDA Cares Solano

CDA Cares, the CDA Foundation’s volunteer-run dental clinic, returns March 8-9 to the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, Calif., and volunteers can now register online to provide their oral health care services at the two-day event.

General dentists, oral surgeons, dental hygienists, dental assistants and lab technicians are needed to provide services that include extractions, fillings, cleanings and a limited number of root canals, dentures and partial dentures, as well as oral health education. Community volunteers who can guide patients and assist with language translation are also needed.

An average of 1,930 people who experience barriers to dental care receive no-cost services at these events, which also aim to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the ongoing need for an adequately funded dental safety net.

The CDA Foundation has wrapped up another successful CDA Cares in Modesto. The volunteer clinic provided more than $1.6 million in care to 1,533 people during the Oct. 27-28 event at the Modesto Centre Plaza — the same location as the very first CDA Cares event held in 2012. Nearly 1,800 volunteers donated their time and skills, including hundreds of dentists and dental health professionals who provided fillings, cleanings, extractions, limited dentures and more.

In the small, close-knit Tongan community in Hayward and the surrounding region, word spread rapidly about a no-cost dental clinic that would visit nearby San Mateo in spring of 2017. Among those who learned about the CDA Foundation’s two-day, volunteer-run biannual clinic was a woman named Eva.

Between the two of them, Jesica Gonzalez and Walter Fuentes, both third-year dental students, have volunteered at 10 CDA Cares clinics. As the Bakersfield natives have progressed in school — Gonzalez at UCSF School of Dentistry and Fuentes at UCLA School of Dentistry — they and others have seen their capabilities evolve at the CDA Foundation’s biannual two-day clinic, which provides oral health care services at no charge to underserved communities.
