Dr. Russ Webb honored for lifetime of generosity

Russ Webb, DDS, was recently honored with the 2014 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award for his lifetime of incredible generosity and his commitment to giving back. Webb was instrumental in the development of the CDA Foundation’s CDA Cares dental program, and has continued as a chair, a lead volunteer, a “chair-trainer” and a recruiter. He also chairs the fundraising committee for the Foundation.

CDA Cares Pomona provides $1.66 million in care

The California Dental Association Foundation’s two-day dental clinic, CDA Cares, provided $1.66 million in charitable dental services to 1,861 people during the Nov. 21-22 event in Pomona. During the two-day charity event, dentists and dental professionals provided fillings, extractions, cleanings and oral health education. Additionally, volunteer technicians in the dental lab area worked to provide 345 full and partial dentures and repairs.
CDA Cares Pomona 'Social Hub' now live

(cdafoundation.org/socialhub) The CDA Cares social hub is a landing page where attendees can view everything being said about the clinic on social media. The Social Hub will now pull activity on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google+ into one central location. All attendees will have to do to participate is use the #cdacares hashtag when sharing their photos, posts and tweets.
CDA Foundation grant recipient helps underserved

With a mission to improve the oral health of all Californians by supporting the dental profession in its efforts to meet community needs, the CDA Foundation offers its Student Loan Repayment Grant to allow dentists to work in public health. This year, Aisha Amin, DMD, has been selected as the Foundation's 15th Student Loan Repayment Grant recipient. A 2013 graduate of A.T. Still University, School of Health Management, Amin said she can relate to those in an underserved community and makes it her personal objective to help improve their well-being.
Ad Council launches new oral health ads

The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, a coalition of 36 dental organizations, including CDA, and the Ad Council have launched a new phase of the Kids' Healthy Mouths campaign urging children to brush for two minutes, twice a day. The second phase features new multi-media public service announcements created to build on the tremendous success of the campaign, launched in August 2012.

The Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives are implementing a national oral health campaign on Nov. 1, the day after Halloween, to remind parents and kids about the importance of regular oral hygiene and brushing for two minutes, twice a day. National Brush Day promotes improving the nation’s children’s oral health by supplying parents with simple information on when to start various levels of oral hygiene with their kids.
Sleep disordered breathing in dental patients

Screening for sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in the dental office can have a big impact on the lives of patients — adding as much as eight to 10 years — according to Steve Carstensen, DDS, who presented a lecture at CDA Presents in San Francisco on the role dentists have in identifying symptoms and helping patients obtain a diagnosis and treatment for the condition.

This unique program that works in partnership with Henry Schein Cares, epitomizing the combined commitment to give back to the industry and communities in which we serve. Selected organizations receive between $5,000 and $25,000 of in-kind goods per year for two years.
State recruits for new dental director position

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has formally announced its search for a state dental director, posting the job description on its website. The recruitment for a state dental director comes more than 15 years after the post went unfilled due to a lack of funding and focus, and is a major achievement for the state’s oral health program and access to care planning goals.

A CDA Cares volunteer dental program is scheduled for Nov. 21-22 at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona. To help provide oral health care services to the large number of expected patients, the CDA Foundation needs various volunteer types to sign up. With the help of community volunteers, dentists and dental professionals, the program will provide at no charge cleanings, fillings, extractions, oral health education and resources for finding a dentist for follow-up care.
Bettie Underwood dental assisting scholarship awarded

The CDA Foundation again provided the Bettie Underwood Dental Assisting Scholarship, selecting Stefanie Dellatori of San Diego Mesa College, to receive the financial award offered to dental assisting students in pursuit of their educational goals. Dellatori showed financial need, academic achievement and a strong desire for a career in the dental field, stating that her long-term goal is to “help patients improve their health through quality care.”

The CDA Foundation has announced Allen Wong, DDS, EdD, as this year’s recipient of its Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award. The award acknowledges and supports eligible faculty affiliated with the state’s six dental schools for their exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education. It was developed to support individuals who contribute to the scholarly and creative activities of California dental students.
CDA Cares has statewide impact as Pomona clinic nears

CDA and the CDA Foundation are gearing up for the second CDA Cares clinic to be held in Southern California. CDA Cares Pomona will take place Nov. 21-22 at the Pomona Fairplex, and volunteers are urged to get involved. In addition to providing care at no charge to approximately 2,000 patients at each clinic, CDA Cares aims to educate the public, media and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need to find long-term solutions, such as an adequately funded dental safety net.

CAMBRA, which stands for Caries Management by Risk Assessment, is a research-based, systematic approach to integrate caries risk assessment as a centerpiece of the dental practice. CAMBRA aims to diagnose and prevent caries through the process of assessing a patient’s risk for caries by examining various health and lifestyle factors as part of their regular dental checkup. When Jean Creasey, DDS, introduced the principles of CAMBRA into her Nevada City practice 13 years ago, she never envisioned the benefits reaped for her patients and the practice she shares with her husband, Craig Creasey, DDS.
CDA Foundation's Legacy Giving unique way to make donations

There are many ways to make a difference in the lives of others and the CDA Foundation’s Legacy Giving Program is one. Through the Legacy Giving Program, dentists can incorporate a charitable donation to the Foundation in their will through estate planning. Dentists who agree to be a part of the CDA Foundation’s Legacy Giving Program are recognized by the organization. A donation of $100,000 or more in a dentist’s will is considered a “legacy gift.”
Toothsavers oral health app sees large download rate

The download numbers for Toothsavers, the free mobile gaming app created by the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, continue to grow.  Through May, the app, which teaches kids ages 3-6 about the importance of oral health, had been downloaded in iTunes a total of 95,545 times worldwide, with 53,482 of those downloads coming in the U.S. What’s more, 81 percent of the sessions on the app are return users and the average session duration was three minutes and 27 seconds.
With passing of Tony Gwynn, CDA shares oral cancer resources

With the passing of Major League Baseball great Tony Gwynn from mouth cancer, CDA reminds dentists that there are many resources available to help their patients stop using tobacco and smokeless tobacco products. Though Gwynn's mouth cancer was never medically linked to the use of smokeless tobacco, he believed it was related to his cancer diagnosis. Experience shows that an oral cancer lesion, which often grows slowly and may be painless, can easily be overlooked by a patient who has "had this spot forever."
CDA Cares volunteer registration now open

Volunteer registration is now open for the CDA Cares Pomona and Sacramento dental clinics. CDA Cares Pomona will be held on Nov. 21-22 at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona. CDA Cares Sacramento will be held on March 27-28, 2015, at Cal Expo. Dentists and dental professionals are needed in areas throughout the clinic.
Dental licensure fees rising

Dental licensure fees are on the rise as the Dental Board of California struggles with rising costs that have led to a significant budget deficit. An increase in initial licensure and biennial renewal fees from $365 to $450 took effect July 1, the current maximum allowed under law, which the Dental Board approved last fall. However, the board still projects a deficit even with the increase to $450. Consequently, the board sponsored SB 1416 (Block) this year, which was signed into law last month and raises the fee to $525 effective Jan. 1, 2015 - the amount the Department of Consumer Affairs has determined the board needs to remain financially solvent.

CDA and local dental advocacy efforts in recent weeks have prompted action from the state, led by Sen. President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and the Department of Health Care Services, to ensure access to dental care performed under anesthesia when medically necessary. Inadequate Medi-Cal reimbursement rates for facility, anesthesia and dental services have forced many facilities statewide to either reduce or discontinue dental services for patients who need to be treated under general anesthesia.
CDA Foundation earns Point of Light Award

CDA Cares was recently selected as a Daily Point of Light Award honoree for the work the CDA Foundation has done through the volunteer dental program. The Daily Point of Light Award was established by President George H.W. Bush to recognize the power of individuals and groups to spark change and improve the world. In a letter sent to the CDA Foundation from the Points of Light program, the efforts of CDA Cares were said to “honor the legacy of this award, demonstrating the power of service to create tangible change … Your efforts are a remarkable example of the generosity and compassion that make our communities stronger and better.”
Foundation seeks applicants for Student Loan Repayment Grant

Dental students and recent graduates interested in providing care in a community clinic have the opportunity to do the work they love and get help with their student debt at the same time, thanks to the CDA Foundation's Student Loan Repayment Grant. The grant awards selected recent dental school/specialty graduates funding to help repay their educational loans of up to $35,000 per year for a maximum of $105,000 over three years in exchange for a commitment by recipients to care for the underserved.

CDA Cares Solano provides $1.5 million in oral health services

The fifth event since 2012, the CDA Foundation and CDA host CDA Cares to provide dental services and oral health education at no charge to Californians who experience barriers to care.

Kids' Healthy Mouths program impacts classrooms

The Scholastic education component of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign led by the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives and the Ad Council has created a big impact in classrooms across America. Since launching last October, Scholastic’s “Two Minutes, Twice a Day” in-school program materials were delivered to 125,000 teachers nationwide via print and have reached more than 3,750,000 children and their families.

Dental practices are being contacted by mail or in person by individuals seeking to collect licensing fees. Many dentists assume it is OK to play movies they have purchased in their waiting rooms, but that is not always the case.

Give Kids a Smile events planned in February

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. The ADA's Give Kids a Smile campaign is a way for dentists to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children. Dentists and other team members volunteer their time, and services, to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. Registration is under way for Give Kids a Smile Day set to be held on Feb. 7.

In an effort to motivate parents and caregivers to take action to reduce their children’s risk of oral disease, the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives have released a new, free mobile gaming app called Toothsavers. The goal of the game is to motivate kids to save their own teeth by brushing for two minutes, twice a day.

UCSF to host C.E. course on CAMBRA

The University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry will host a C.E. course on Caries Management By Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) beginning in March for dentists interested in implementing the strategies in their practice. Coursera: Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) will be led by John D.B. Featherstone, MSc, PhD, Professor and Dean, UCSF School of Dentistry, from March 31 to May 12 and will teach attendees to immediately apply “caries management by risk assessment” into their clinical setting or into their personal health care.
CDA Cares San Diego provides care to 2,203 patients

During the two-day event, dentists and dental professionals provided more than 12,518 dental procedures, including cleanings, fillings, extractions and oral health education. Additionally, volunteer dental lab technicians worked to create 221 complete and partial dentures and repairs.

CDA Foundation helps new dentist serve community in need

With a personal objective to provide quality dental service and education to the underserved, Stephanie Calvillo, DDS, was recently awarded the CDA Foundation’s 2013 Student Loan Repayment Grant. The grant provides up to $105,000 over three years toward repayment of student loans in exchange for a commitment to care for underserved individuals.

Student Loan Repayment Grant recipients visit CDA

Since 2002, the CDA Foundation’s Student Loan Repayment Grant program has helped 13 dentists work in community clinics where they’ve seen more than 62,000 patients and provided nearly $16 million in care for individuals who would otherwise go without. Six of those 13 dentists visited the CDA headquarters recently to share their stories of working in community clinics.

CDA Motorcycle Ride raises money for Foundation

The Fifth Annual CDA “Ken Sanford Memorial Motorcycle Ride” in September raised a record amount for the CDA Foundation and its programs. The motorcycle ride, during which dentists rode for 300-400 miles from Windsor through the Northern California coast and wine country, raised $9,250, which is $3,350 more than last year’s ride.
CAMBRA project seeks volunteers for research network

The CDA Foundation and the UCSF School of Dentistry are attempting to alter the way dentists prevent caries through a practice-based clinical trial, and volunteers are needed. The Caries Management By Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) Practice-Based Research Network formalizes the process to assess a patient’s risk for caries by examining various health and lifestyle factors as part of their regular dental checkup. The Foundation and UCSF are looking to expand an already established research network, which focuses on the implementation of CAMBRA.
Farmers Insurance Donates $15,000 for CDA Cares San Diego

The California Dental Association Foundation is pleased to announce a significant donation from new sponsor Farmers Insurance, which donated $15,000 to the Foundation in support of its CDA Cares volunteer dental program in San Diego scheduled Dec. 7-8. To date, with the help of 4,559 volunteers, CDA Cares has provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.

The September issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association focuses on the dentist’s role and obligations in caring for people with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (AwDA) and the Fair Employment and Housing Act in California. Articles include a review of the basics of the AwDA, a discussion of CDA resources to help members understand the applicability and scope of the AwDA laws, and a brief history of state legislation, including legislation in 2008 regarding certified access specialists and voluntary facility inspections to reduce accessibility claims.

The CDA Foundation raised nearly $17,000 in June at its Targeting Smiles Sporting Clays Tournament. The tournament raised money for the CDA Foundation and its programs through generous donations and a raffle and silent auction. Event sponsors included John Pisacane, DMD, Henry Schein, Associated Pension Consultants, Comstock Mortgage, Patterson Dental Company and Don Rollofson, DMD.
Foundation takes CDA Cares to San Diego

The CDA Foundation is set to host its fourth CDA Cares free dental clinic in San Diego in December, and the need couldn’t be greater. The San Diego clinic is the first CDA Cares clinic to be held in Southern California — the first three were in Modesto, Sacramento and San Jose. The three clinics combined have provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.

The deadline to apply for the CDA Foundation’s 2013 Student Loan Repayment Grant is July 31. The Student Loan Repayment Grant helps students repay their educational loan of up to $35,000 per year for a maximum of $105,000 over three years in exchange for a commitment by recipients to care for the underserved.
Volunteer registration open for CDA Cares San Diego

Volunteer registration is now open for the CDA Cares San Diego free dental clinic set to be held on Dec. 7-8 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The clinic will help provide oral health care services to the large number of expected patients. Dentists and dental professionals are needed in areas throughout the clinic, including restorative, numbing, pediatric, triage and routing. Dental team members are encouraged to volunteer as well. Community volunteers are needed to assist with registration, clinic setup, data entry, escorting patients, translating and much more.

In a four-part series, CDA is profiling members who have taken different approaches to how they practice in order to counter changes in the profession such as an overall drop in adults seeking dental care, the decline in the economy and real estate market, increased regulatory compliance, reduced reimbursement rates and more. The first article in the series features a dentist who practices in Stockton with a diverse population, including low-income patients. During the last five to 10 years, she has made several changes in her practice to become more efficient.

The ADA recently launched a nationwide campaign to combat what it calls “a disturbing dental divide in America.” The Action for Dental Health: Dentists Making a Difference is designed to counter staggering statistics such as these: 181 million Americans didn't visit a dentist in 2010, nearly half of the population over the age of 30 is suffering from some form of gum disease and nearly one in four children under the age of 5 already has cavities.
Legislature approves restoring Adult Denti-Cal

The effort to restore Adult Denti-Cal benefits is one step closer to reality after the Legislature voted on a new state budget plan. The funding, which is a result of the leadership exhibited by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), still needs the governor’s signature. Steinberg made the restoration of Adult Denti-Cal a top priority after his visit last August to CDA Cares in Sacramento.
CDA Cares serves thousands in San Jose

Preliminary numbers indicate 2,202 patients received free oral health care at the CDA Cares San Jose dental clinic over the weekend. Hosted by the CDA Foundation and CDA, the May 18-19 dental clinic provided more than $1.6 million in oral health care services to the underserved. The San Jose clinic, which was held at the San Jose Convention Center, was the third CDA Cares event. The three clinics combined have now provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.
CDA Foundation focused on maximizing donations

Since its inception more than a decade ago, the CDA Foundation has awarded scholarships to nearly 200 dental students and more than 500 allied personnel. And this is just one of the CDA Foundation’s accomplishments. As the charitable arm of CDA, the CDA Foundation’s mission is to improve the oral health of all Californians by supporting the dental profession in its efforts to meet community needs.

A recent decision by the Olivehurst Public Utility District to discontinue fluoridation of its community water supply is a reminder that debates concerning fluoride, as well as amalgam, continue to surface in California, and that dentists need to be aware of any activity in their communities. Local dental societies and their members can make an impact with something as simple as offering opinions or suggesting their local elected officials get more information on the subject from the dental society or CDA.
CDA Cares receives major donations

El Camino Hospital and Santa Clara County have donated a combined $45,000 toward the CDA Cares San Jose dental clinic. El Camino Hospital, which donated $20,000, is a nonprofit organization with hospital campuses in Mountain View and Los Gatos. The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved a $25,000 donation earlier this month.

Foundation helps fund Santa Clara community water fluoridation

The California Dental Association Foundation approved $500,000 from its restricted fluoridation funds to be used to support a new Santa Clara Valley Water District community water fluoridation system. The entire system will cost $6.6 million and the CDA Foundation, along with $1 million from The Health Trust and $900,000 from First 5 Santa Clara County, are contributing to this project. CDAF’s funds will go toward actual construction costs.
CDA Cares clinic set to be held in San Jose

Dentist impacts lives with help of Foundation

Recognizing a dedication to dentistry and a commitment to improving the oral health of Californians, the CDA Foundation recently selected its 13th Student Loan Repayment Grant recipient as Kongsab Hatlavongsa, DDS. The Student Loan Repayment Grant program exists to relieve new dentists of a portion of their debt in exchange for a three-year commitment to practice in an underserved community.
