Von Chan, DDS, believes a well-functioning dental practice is comprised of employees who are highly trained and motivated to keep learning, and that is why she takes her entire staff to CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry.
“A highly trained staff is much more efficient and much more knowledgeable when talking to patients regarding their treatment,” said Chan, who practices in Petaluma.
Chan, who has been attending CDA Presents for the last 11 years herself, has sent her staff to the show for the last five years. CDA Presents features dynamic speakers, an extensive tradeshow, numerous C.E. credit opportunities and social events in the heart of world-class destinations, Anaheim and San Francisco. The next CDA Presents will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center on April 11-13, 2012.
From lectures on excellence in esthetics to tips on improving your daily practice of removable prosthodontics to awakening the instinctive “leader in YOU” — there is something for everyone. That’s why Chan takes advantage of the opportunity. She has her staff attend profession-specific lectures and workshops (the dental assistants attend dental assistant-geared courses, the office manager attends office manager-geared courses, etc.).
“It is great for them to be around their peers and to experience new things in the industry,” Chan said.
Mary Pendergast, registered dental hygienist at Chan’s practice, agrees.
“The pace of things are changing so fast in the industry so you have to keep up on it, and this is the best way to do it,” Pendergast said.
Pendergast has attended CDA Presents San Francisco for the last four years and enjoys the classes as well as the new products on the tradeshow floor.
“Some of the classes feature well-regarded hygienists and it is nice to learn about new techniques and new medicines from them. It’s also great to see some of the new technology and new products that are out on the trade floor,” Pendergast said.
Chan’s office manager, Judy Hansen, is always interested in continuing her education.
“I like to go to the marketing classes at CDA Presents because there are always new ideas taken from those courses,” Hansen said.
Chan requires each of her staff members to bring back valuable information they glean from the show and incorporate those things into the practice.
“I require that they bring back ‘three pearls of knowledge’ to share and implement the following Monday,” Chan said. “They always come back excited.”
Outside of the learning experience, Chan and her staff appreciate the team bonding that occurs at CDA Presents.
“We always try to eat together at lunch and dinner and while everybody has it fresh in their minds, we talk about the classes we attended that day,” Chan said. “It gets us excited about dentistry every time … every dentist should bring their whole team.”
Pendergast said she enjoys the time away from the office with her peers.
“It’s nice because we have a very busy office and it can get a little intense, so it gives us some time to enjoy each other in a non-work environment,” Pendergast said. “Dr. Chan shows an appreciation for her team by taking us.”
