The CDA Cares program allows volunteer dentists, with the assistance of other dental professionals, to provide dental services at no charge to patients who experience barriers to care, none of which would be possible without the support of various corporate sponsors.
One of the key sponsors of CDA Cares is Benco Dental Company. Benco Dental has supported the CDA Foundation’s efforts since the first CDA Cares event in Modesto in May 2012, and the company is stepping up yet again to be a Presenting Sponsor for the San Diego program on Dec. 7-8.
“Benco Dental has been an amazing partner in helping us both launch and maintain the success of the CDA Cares programs,” said Don Rollofson, DMD, chair of the CDA Foundation. “We couldn’t be more excited about the fact that they are willing to be a Presenting Sponsor in San Diego.”
Benco’s significant level of support for the San Diego program will come in the form of much-needed supplies, including burs, anesthetic, needles, sutures, Prophy Paste and Prophy Angles, disinfecting wipes, and personal protective equipment such as disposable gowns, masks and gloves. Community involvement is one of the key principles this family business operates under.
Benco strives for ways to have positive relationships with the communities they serve, said Brian Evans, Benco’s director of sales – west.
“We want to help sustain and continue to provide services to those in need in the communities we do business in,” Evans said. “Our involvement in the community and our involvement in philanthropy projects is a big piece of the company’s culture. That culture is driven from the founder of the company.”
Benco Dental is a privately owned, full-service dental distributor that has remained a family business since it was founded in 1930 by Benjamin J. Cohen, a Russian immigrant living in Philadelphia. During Benco’s history, the company has grown from a single storefront location in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., into a dental distributor with more than 50 regional showroom locations and five distribution centers servicing more than 30,000 dental professionals in 40-plus states. In California, Benco has showrooms in Costa Mesa (CenterPoint West), San Diego, Sacramento and Fresno, and covers the Southern and Central California regions. They hope soon to expand into the Bay Area in 2014.
Benco has brought that background of success to CDA Cares, where the company not only provides supplies, but also volunteers. Many of the company’s staff have participated as volunteers at previous CDA Cares events and plan to do so again in San Diego.
“Seeing firsthand how Benco’s contribution is changing lives is truly amazing,” said Julie Bishop, Benco territory representative, Sacramento. “I will definitely be back to help again in the future.”
Jose Virrueta, territory representative for Benco Dental, said volunteering provides great fulfillment.
"I am very excited to have been invited to be a part of the CDA Cares programs through the CDA Foundation because it gives me an opportunity to focus on serving others,” Virrueta said. "There's a lot of fulfillment as a result of seeing a happy smile or an excited patient after they see themselves in the mirror or after they realize that they can smile again."
To date, with the help of 4,559 volunteers, CDA Cares has provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.
Sher Cox, Benco territory representative, San Diego, was one of those 4,559 volunteers. Her experience at the CDA Cares San Jose event in May left her inspired.
"I was driven and inspired by the amazing energy of all who contributed as well as the powerful sense of knowing we were all changing lives by giving back. I urge everyone who loves this profession to give back a weekend and enjoy the gift you get in return," Cox said.
Benco’s commitment to the community has paid off for those on the West Coast. Headquartered in Pittston, Pa., Benco has been on a westward expansion in recent years. The company opened a major distribution center in Reno in June 2011 and opened its CenterPoint West facility in Costa Mesa last year. CenterPoint West is a mirror image of the equipment showroom and learning center at the company’s headquarters in Pennsylvania. The Costa Mesa facility features 25 operatories, including all specialties, along with an X-ray room equipped with 19 fully functional digital panoramic and 3-D units. The showroom also features the company’s office design center.
“At these facilities, we try to create an experience for the doctors that is world class from a design and equipment standpoint,” Evans said. “When dentists come to CenterPoint, they can see the different equipment options we have. We have a camera room, for example, where they can demo sensors and look at the different panoramic X-rays and interiors from a design standpoint. We bring them in there to give them options to build their new offices.”
Benco also was recently ranked No. 9 among the top 29 large employers in the state of Pennsylvania for “Best Places to Work in PA.” The list is compiled by Team PA Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, The Pennsylvania State Council of SHRM and the Central Penn Business Journal.
“This marks the ninth time in 10 years that we’ve made the list, and this year’s No. 9 Large Company ranking is our best showing yet,” said George Rable, vice president of culture and people for Benco Dental. “We go to great lengths to hire and retain the best people, and when you do that, good things happen.”
CDA Cares will be in San Diego Dec. 7-8, Vallejo on April 24-25, 2014, and Pomona on Nov. 20-21, 2014.
In addition to helping reduce barriers to dental care for those in need, the CDA Cares program also educates the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net, including a state dental director who can develop programs to improve the oral health of Californians.
