RM11: Charting the Course
Patient records are one of the most important tools for delivering continuous, consistent care and promoting positive relations with patients. They are vital for supporting diagnostic and treatment decisions. TDIC’s claims experience reveals that the quality of patient charts often impacts case outcomes. Using actual case examples, RM11: Charting the Course explores some of the significant features of proper recordkeeping and addresses how new technology is changing the way dentists document and maintain patient records. After completing this course, you will:
- Understand that a complete patient record is more than just treatment notes
- Appreciate the importance of thorough and appropriate documentation
- Realize how recordkeeping affects continuity of care
- Understand the risks associated with allowing patients to dictate treatment
- Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of electronic recordkeeping

RM10: Sharing Patients and Risks
With the improvements in dental technology and the increase in patient awareness, practitioners are sharing patients more than in the past. Cases that at one time could have been managed by a single dentist such as periodontal disease, implants, and medically compromised patients now often require a team approach. Practitioners, no matter how diverse their experience and training, share important patient information, and contribute to effective treatment planning. While the team approach is a positive advancement for the patient, it does not come without liability issues for practitioners. Through the examination of actual TDIC cases, RM10 will explore three main areas, communication with colleagues, procedures and documentation, and shifting from prevention to defense.
Webcast - Caries Management by Risk Assessment (archived)
California has seen many positive steps in children’s oral health in the past year, including the passage of legislation for oral assessments for school admission and Medi-Cal’s decision to reimburse physicians for topical fluoride application. This webcast will focus on the importance of a dental home by age one, the prevention of early childhood caries, and how to enhance a dental practice by incorporating a team approach to caries management. Appropriate for all members of the dental team, participants will hear from one dental practice who has found success with caries management by risk assessment and how they did it. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions via email during the webcast.
Webcast - The Practitioner’s Guide to CAMBRA (archived)
This course moves the practitioner from the scientific basis for Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) as presented in the February and March 2003 issues of the Journal of the California Dental Association to the practical implementation of these concepts into practice. Clinical protocols suggested in the October and November, 2007 issues of the Journal of the California Dental Association were developed by experts in the field of cariology, dental practice, academic research and successful practictioners of CAMBRA.
