Good Intentions - Bad Outcomes
Good Intentions – Bad Outcomes addresses what to do when a bad outcome is the result of a dentist with good intentions. Through examination of actual TDIC cases, this course explores what to do when well-meaning dentists encounter patients with unrealistic expectations or dictate treatment. It also shows how important it is to take a team approach when multiple dentists treat one patient and what to do if facing employee embezzlement. After completing this course, attendees will be able to:
- Effectively communicate during the initial appointment to determine if the patient is realistic in his or her treatment expectations.
- Manage unreasonable patient treatment expectations by recognizing and reacting to warning signs.
- Agree to and implement an appropriate treatment plan without allowing the patient to dictate treatment.
- Ensure continuity of care using a team approach with staff and other treating specialists.
- Place appropriate checks and balances for employees in a business setting to avoid embezzlement.
Visit the TDIC website for more information.
Framework for Positive and Effective Interactions
TDIC's claims experience shows that the way a doctor handles interactions with patients and staff directly affects the outcome of claims. Miscommunication, unexpected outcomes and lack of information can lead to serious consequences. Using actual claims as examples, Framework for Positive and Effective Interactions will give attendees practical methods for improving their interactions and enabling them to avoid or mitigate potential claims. Examples include encouraging staff to practice outside the scope of their license, firing a pregnant employee, disregarding patient complaints and apologizing without admitting liability. After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Establish and implement an office pregnancy policy to avoid discrimination and wrongful termination allegations.
- Incorporate corrective action practices to improve employee performance.
- Institute protocols when treating patients with language barriers to secure their understanding of treatment.
- Understand the importance of ensuring staff practice within the scope of their license.
- Communicate untoward results without admitting liability.
Visit the TDIC website for more information.
Charting the Course
Patient records are one of the most important tools for delivering continuous, consistent care and promoting positive relations with patients. They are vital for supporting diagnostic and treatment decisions. TDIC’s claims experience reveals that the quality of patient charts often impacts case outcomes. Using actual case examples, Charting the Course explores some of the significant features of proper recordkeeping and addresses how new technology is changing the way dentists document and maintain patient records. After completing this course, you will:
- Understand that a complete patient record is more than just treatment notes
- Appreciate the importance of thorough and appropriate documentation
- Realize how recordkeeping affects continuity of care
- Understand the risks associated with allowing patients to dictate treatment
- Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of electronic recordkeeping
- Be able to implement changes to your own recordkeeping system
