Mission Statement

To ensure that the public and profession have access to an objective, professional review of disputes concerning the quality and/or appropriateness of dental care via the statewide peer review system.

Primary Duties

  • Oversee the peer review system to ensure that component and specialty committees consistently follow the format, policies, and procedures outlined in the California Dental Association Peer Review Manual.
  • Directly manage and oversee the appeals process to ensure that all appeals of peer review resolutions are objective and fair to all parties involved.
  • Provide information on current peer review issues, policy, and procedural modifications to component peer review staff, committee members, and the general membership.
  • Review and update the California Dental Association Peer Review Manual and the Quality Evaluation Manual, as needed.
  • Provide regional calibration workshops for component and specialty committee members to ensure uniformity, consistency, timelines, and effectiveness.  Provide training materials for new peer review committee members.  
  • Review and finalize all peer review cases filed throughout the state.
  • Promote peer review as a membership benefit via articles in the CDA Update, component newsletters, and presentations to the general membership at component continuing education courses.
  • Facilitate and maintain communication between component and specialty peer review committees.
  • Develop methods to enhance the review process to reduce the liability risks to the peer review system.

Time Requirements

Council meetings: 4 one-day meetings per year
Annual workshop: 1 day
Sessions: 2 days (spring and fall)
Regional/calibration: 10 days per year (1 or 2 council members to attend each workshop)
Conference calls: 1 day per month (approximately 1 to 2 hour calls)

Qualifications, Special Skills and Knowledge

  • An in-depth working knowledge of the peer review process is necessary
  • Having served as chair of the component peer review committee for a minimum of one year or as a member of the component peer review committee for a minimum of three years
  • Willingness to make public presentations to various size groups about the peer review system
  • Willingness to assist staff in developing presentation formats, commitment to learning and giving presentations at workshops
  • Must be in active practice for minimum of five years

Composition

The Council on Peer Review is composed of 12 members.

Terms of Office

The term of office of Council on Peer Review members shall be three years.  The tenure of a member shall be two terms.
