Mission Statement
The Committee on the New Dentist serves to identify and address the needs and issues facing new dentists, assist in the transition from graduate to new practitioner, encourage and promote membership, involvement and active participation of new dentists in organized dentistry, serve in an advisory role on issues affecting new dentists, and promote the perspectives of the new dentist on councils, committees, and task forces as appointed by the president.
Primary Duties
- Represent the new dentist perspective on CDA councils, committees, and task forces as guest members
- Develop the tripartite network for new dentists, by assisting in the development of component new dentist committees and supporting the programs of the ADA Committee on the New Dentist
- Participate in CDA dental student activities, including involvement in dental student leadership programs
- Identify and assist new dentists in developing leadership skills, in conjunction with the Leadership Development Committee
- Support and participate in political activities, particularly initiatives which impact new dentists
- Work with the CDA Presents Board of Managers and CDA Education Department to provide valuable programs and educational resources to new dentists
- In conjunction with the Council on Membership, develop recruitment and retention strategies for new dentist members
Time Requirements
Committee Meetings: 2 one-day meetings
Committee Meeting at CDA Presents Anaheim: 1 one-day meeting
Council Meetings as Guest Member: 4 one-day meetings
Conferences/Additional Meetings: TBD
ADA New Dentist Conference (Chair and Vice-Chair only): 1 two-day meeting
Qualifications/Special Skills and Knowledge
- Must be a new dentist (defined as ten years of licensure or less)
- Some knowledge of CDA and component
Composition and Terms of Office
The Committee on the New Dentist shall be composed of eight members: seven at-large members, who must be dentists within their first 10 years of licensure and who have not served or are not currently serving in an at-large or trustee position on a council, committee, or board at CDA, its subsidiaries or affiliates; and the Thirteenth District representative at the ADA Committee on the New Dentist, who shall be an ex officio, non-voting member. The committee shall invite one student from the California Dental Schools on an annual rotation to serve as a guest. The president shall appoint one trustee to serve as a liaison.
The term of office of at-large members of the committee shall be one year. The tenure of an at-large member of the committee shall be limited to three full or partial terms.
