ADA Council on Government Affairs

Mission Statement

The Council on Government Affairs recommends policies related to legislative and regulatory issues, including the formulation of proposed federal legislation.  The council also disseminates information to assist constituent and component societies on state legislative and regulatory matters.  The CGA is the Association’s liaison with agencies of the federal government, especially those agencies that employ dental personnel.

Time Requirements

  • Three 3-day meetings per year (Thursday evening, Friday, Saturday morning); typically scheduled in January, April (in conjunction with Washington Leadership Conference), and September.
  • Conference call meetings scheduled as needed.
  • Review emails regarding the development of specific issues on a regular basis.
  • Active participation, with the opportunity to provide input on how the issues are being developed.

Qualifications, Skills, Special Knowledge

The Council on Government Affairs has reviewed its functions and responsibilities and recommends the following as criteria which can be helpful in assuring that individuals who are nominated to be Council members have appropriate expertise and interest.

  1. a strong background in the legislative process;
  2. experience on constituent society legislative committees;
  3. a knowledge of Association policies and the ability to apply those policies to existing legislation; and
  4. a knowledge of the political process, ADPAC and relationships with members of Congress.

Council members cannot be in the full-time employ of the federal government and consideration shall be given to a candidate’s experience in the military or other federal dental service.

Terms of Office

Members of this council shall serve one 4-year term.
