Mission Statement
The mission of the Judicial Council is the promotion and maintenance of high ethical standards within the dental profession; development and uniform enforcement of a viable and legally enforceable Code of Ethics; and interpretation and enforcement of the Code of Ethics on behalf of the association, components, individual members, and the public.
Primary Duties
Assist in carrying out the following objectives of the Judicial Council:
- Promote, through correspondence, workshops and presentations, the maintenance of high ethical standards within the dental profession. This includes presenting ethics education programs at local and statewide meetings.
- Ensure development of a viable and legally enforceable Code of Ethics by participating in regular reviews and evaluations of the Code of Ethics and related Ethics Handbook sections.
- Interpret and enforce the Code of Ethics on behalf of the association, component dental societies and individual members by reviewing and responding to calls, correspondence and case referrals from component ethics committees.
- Provide guidance to the ethics committees at the component dental societies to ensure that processes and procedures defined in the Ethics Handbook are appropriately applied and followed.
Time Requirements
Council meetings: 4 one-day meetings per year
Conference calls: 1 hour per month, plus 1-2 hours to review applicable cases prior to each call
Ethics workshop: 1 day per year
Ethics education: Two 30-45 minute ethics education presentations at state and local dental society meetings annually, plus preparation time
Qualifications, Special Skills and Knowledge
- A minimum of two years experience at the component level as a membership or ethics committee chair, or three years experience as a membership or ethics committee member; and/or
- Ability to demonstrate significant knowledge in dental ethics or ethics education
- Previous participation in formal ethics programs is highly desirable
- Oral communication and presentation skills
Composition and Terms of Office
The Judicial Council shall be composed of a total of 11 members.
The term of office of members of the Judicial Council shall be three years. The tenure of a member shall be two terms.
