Farmers Insurance Donates $15,000 for CDA Cares San Diego

The California Dental Association Foundation is pleased to announce a significant donation from new sponsor Farmers Insurance, which donated $15,000 to the Foundation in support of its CDA Cares volunteer dental program in San Diego scheduled Dec. 7-8. To date, with the help of 4,559 volunteers, CDA Cares has provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients. Read more >>

 

Major health care reform milestone reached

After months of intense preparation, Covered California, the health insurance marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), began its open enrollment period on Oct. 1. Consumers can now begin the process of comparing and purchasing affordable medical and dental insurance coverage online, and Covered California is offering in-person and phone support for those who need it. Amalgam target of city action

After nearly a year of consideration by two community advisory commissions, the Berkeley City Council voted 6-3 last week in favor of a resolution that encourages, but does not require, reduced use of dental amalgam and other potential sources of mercury exposure.  The final resolution is consistent with CDA’s belief that the decision to use amalgam should remain an informed choice that is made by each individual patient in consultation with his or her dentist. Members can show they are #cdaproud

To help capture the passion its members have for organized dentistry, CDA has launched the #cdaproud social media contest. To participate in the contest, which begins Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 31, CDA's Facebook fans can take a photo of themselves posing with their CDA orange or any CDA clothing/materials (including but not limited to T-shirts, publications, merchandise from the online store, etc.) and tag their photo caption with #cdaproud. CDA, coalition file petition to stop Medi-Cal rate cuts

CDA and a coalition of health care organizations aiming to stop Medi-Cal rate cuts implemented by the state filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Friday. The Petition for Writ of Certiorari asks the Court to reverse the decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upholding the rate cuts. Read more >>

 

MICRA legislation fails to materialize

The 2013 legislative session came to a close without the introduction of legislation backed by trial attorneys to raise the MICRA cap on non-economic damages. CDA and partners in the coalition, Californians Allied for Patient Protection (CAPP), actively worked to communicate to legislators the importance of maintaining current provisions of the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act, which ensures injured patients receive fair compensation, while stabilizing liability costs. CDA establishes partnership with South Korean dental organization

To further develop international relations and collaborative partnerships, CDA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a South Korean dental association in August at CDA Presents in San Francisco. The signing binds CDA with the Gyeonggi Dental Association to forge scientific cooperative relations conceding matters such as contributing to the development/advancement of dental medicine in their respective countries. Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration has announced that it is no longer moving forward with a legislative package to reform the Proposition 65 warning notice and litigation laws. CDA had been the only health care organization invited to participate in stakeholder discussions with the administration on this issue. Read more >>

 

What to include in a medical emergency kit

Many CDA members are calling the CDA Practice Support Center and asking what they need to include in their medical emergency kit. Most dental offices have one emergency kit to be used for both employees and patients. For employees, Cal/OSHA does not specify what should be in a medical emergency kit, just that the employer have documentation that a physician approved the kit. Read more >>
