Proposed ban on CT self-referrals stalls

Legislation that could have significantly limited the use of cone-beam radiographic equipment in dental offices failed to advance on April 28 at a hearing of the Senate Business and Professions Committee. Current state law prohibits health care providers from “self-referring” patients to themselves for diagnostic procedures such as laboratory tests and radiographs, but specifically exempts procedures ordered and performed in a provider’s own office. SB 1215, authored by Sen. Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina), would have eliminated this in-office exemption for “advanced imaging.” Read more >>

Nearly 100 new product launches set for CDA Presents in Anaheim

The exhibit hall floor at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry will boast nearly 100 new dental product launches, allowing dentists the ability to stay current on the latest trends in the industry. Located in the Anaheim Convention Center, the exhibit hall floor is 135,000 square feet and will feature 575 exhibiting companies. Dentists can protect their future with disability insurance

CDA Cares Solano provides $1.5 million in oral health services

The California Dental Association Foundation’s two-day dental clinic, CDA Cares, provided nearly $1.5 million in charitable dental services to 1,959 people during the April 25-26 event in Solano County. The fifth event since 2012, the CDA Foundation and CDA host CDA Cares to provide dental services and oral health education at no charge to Californians who experience barriers to care. The Dentists Insurance Company reports repeated calls to its Advice Line about harassment of dental staff by patients or vendors. Federal and state laws forbid harassment of employees, and dentists have an obligation as employers to maintain a safe workplace. Further, dentists can be held liable if a harassment situation is not addressed, according to an attorney specializing in labor and employment law. Read more >>

May Journal now available online

The May issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association is now available. It covers a variety of topics including nutrition and periodontal disease, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, factors affecting dentists’ incomes and more. One specific clinical case report describes the steps involved in treatment planning, treatment, laboratory communication and materials for the replication of natural polychromicity to restore and match incisors to the rest of the natural teeth.
