Employment Practices Liability insurance, often referred to as EPL, provides protection for dental practice owners against specific claims made by employees, former employees or prospective employees. EPL covers employment-related claims such as discrimination because of age, sex, race or disability, wrongful termination and sexual harassment, and pays for defense costs, settlements and civil damages in the event of such allegations. Risk Management analysts at The Dentists Insurance Company say it is common for policyholders to mistakenly think their Professional and Business Liability insurance covers employment-related lawsuits. While California providers are still waiting to hear from Delta Dental of California about expected fee reductions for its Premier Plan, Missouri dentists received a letter recently from Delta Dental of Missouri that outlined plans in that state to reduce reimbursements to providers who participate in Delta’s Premier and PPO networks. The fee reduction, which went into effect July 1, averages 7 percent. Delta Dental of California has not been forthcoming with its reasons for cutting reimbursement rates, nor has it officially informed California providers about its intentions; however, the reductions are expected to be an average of 8 to 12 percent implemented later this year. The deadline to apply for the CDA Foundation’s 2013 Student Loan Repayment Grant is July 31. The Student Loan Repayment Grant helps students repay their educational loan of up to $35,000 per year for a maximum of $105,000 over three years in exchange for a commitment by recipients to care for the underserved. Volunteer registration open for CDA Cares San Diego

Volunteer registration is now open for the CDA Cares San Diego free dental clinic set to be held on Dec. 7-8 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The clinic will help provide oral health care services to the large number of expected patients. Dentists and dental professionals are needed in areas throughout the clinic, including restorative, numbing, pediatric, triage and routing. Dental team members are encouraged to volunteer as well. Community volunteers are needed to assist with registration, clinic setup, data entry, escorting patients, translating and much more. Read more >>

Legislation aimed at making sure dental plans put more of their revenues into actual care for patients passed its first legislative hurdle.  AB 18 (Pan), championed by CDA, successfully moved through the Assembly Health Committee, overcoming strong objections from dental plans and health plans. Each level of the tripartite structure of organized dentistry offers valuable benefits and resources to dentists across California, including education, protection, support and advocacy. None of it would be possible without the foresight of thousands of dentists, and that leadership begins in the state’s dental schools. Soon-to-be dentists across the state are active at their respective schools.
