TDSC Western-states expansion gains media coverage
The Dentists Supply Company’s announcement of its Western-states expansion in November generated publicity in several national dental publications and a regional business journal. The articles highlighted the expanded supply offerings to nine additional states, allowing association members of organized dentistry to benefit from 20 percent average savings on a broad online catalog of supplies. Bartering your dental services? Get it in writing
Some dentists agree to trade their work for other professional services or items of value. Bartering is nothing new; it was the only method for exchanging goods and services until hard currency became the norm thousands of years ago. But for dentists, bartering can lay the groundwork for a liability claim should things not go as planned. TDIC reports a case in which a dentist bartered with a patient for landscaping services in exchange for full-mouth reconstruction.
Give Kids a Smile 2019 kicks off Feb. 1
Local dental societies are teaming up with the ADA once again for the annual Give Kids a Smile program, a volunteer initiative to provide dental screenings, treatment and education at no charge to underserved children. Give Kids a Smile kicks off the first Friday in February to coincide with National Children’s Dental Health Month. This year, the date is Feb. 1; however, GKAS programs can take place throughout the year.
Medi-Cal Dental Program improvements aim to recruit, retain providers
Through the improved Medi-Cal Dental Program, more than 13 million individuals are eligible for dental benefits, and a streamlined application and significant rate increases are prompting more dentists to join the program as providers. The changes follow years of action to improve the program, including CDA’s efforts to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health care. Jennifer Kent, director of the California Department of Health Care Services, in this Q&A discusses the program’s recent changes and what dentists can expect as providers.
Foundation accepting applications for 2019 Dugoni Faculty Award
The application deadline for the 2019 Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award has been extended to Tuesday, April 30. Each year, the CDA Foundation accepts applications for the Dugoni Faculty Award, named for Arthur A. Dugoni, DDS, MSD, and his vast accomplishments in dental education and organized dentistry. Applicants must hold a full- or part-time teaching position and be connected with a dental program associated with a California dental school.
Employers must provide sexual harassment prevention training to all employees by Jan. 1, 2020
Then-Gov. Jerry Brown last September signed a bill requiring California employers of five or more employees to provide expanded training on sexual harassment prevention to all of their employees by Jan. 1, 2020. Practically speaking, this means employers will need to complete the mandatory one- or two-hour trainings for employees in 2019 to be compliant by the January 2020 deadline.

New serial number required on controlled-substances prescription forms
A new state law requires that tamper-resistant prescription forms for controlled substances have unique serial numbers. These numbers will be linked to corresponding records in California’s prescription-drug monitoring program known as CURES. The requirement is part of Assembly Bill 1753 signed into law last September. New prescription forms should be ordered from a “serial # compliant printer” as indicated on the DOJ’s website.

Anaheim convention is the pre-eminent C.E. event for dentists in 2019
Dentists will have more than the usual number of opportunities to learn about restorative materials, processes and techniques at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry May 16-18 at the Anaheim Convention Center. With its educational focus on restorative dentistry, the convention will offer more than 16 lectures and workshops, including an engaging panel discussion featuring leaders in the field.
Del Brunner, DDS, begins term as 2019 CDA president
Del Brunner, DDS, on Jan. 1 took the helm as CDA’s president for 2019. The graduate of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC practiced dentistry in Ventura for more than 40 years. A longtime member of CDA, ADA and the Santa Barbara Ventura County Dental Society, he has held numerous leadership positions and served on many CDA councils and committees including the CDA Presents Board of Managers, the Strategic Planning Committee and the CDA Foundation Board.
Forensic odontologists help identify victims of disaster, crime
As the smoke cleared from the Northern California wildfire that destroyed more than 153,000 acres, 18,804 structures and most of the town of Paradise last November, four CDA members worked night and day at the Sacramento morgue to help identify the remains of victims who died in that fire. Led by California Assemblymember Jim Wood, DDS, the team of forensic odontologists, including Drs. George Gould, Roland Chew, Mark Porco and Duane Spencer, examined teeth, tooth roots, metal crowns and porcelain fillings.
'I always leave CDA Cares with renewed pride in my profession'
Fairfield native James Sanderson, DDS, was made for his role as chair of the CDA Cares Solano Local Arrangements Committee. Prop. 56 Dental Loan Repayment Program will award up to $300K
Preliminary criteria for the Prop. 56 Dental Loan Repayment Program were recently announced by the California Department of Health Care Services. The program will repay up to $300,000 toward student loans for dentists who commit to serving Denti-Cal beneficiaries. Applications will open this spring with participants selected no later than July 1.

TDIC-acquired companies receive final merger approval
The Dentists Insurance Company received final approval to merge Dentists Benefits Insurance Company and Northwest Dentists Insurance Company, acquired in February 2017, into TDIC effective Jan. 1. The merger was approved by the California Department of Insurance, the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation and the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
In-office discount plans: Legal requirements and other considerations
In a dental economy dominated by PPOs, dentists are looking for ways to encourage patients, particularly those with limited coverage or no coverage at all, to seek the care they need. According to the ADA, access to dental insurance is the No. 1 predictor of a dental visit due to the patient’s ability to offset their out-of-pocket expense for oral health care.
Online C.E. course calendar updated through June 2019
As a member benefit, CDA provides an online continuing education course calendar that includes pages of course offerings — currently more than 250 — for dentists who want to enhance their practice and professional development or simply need credits for license renewal. The calendar pulls from sources throughout the state, including CDA, local components and dental schools.
