The ADA has published a new guide designed to assist dental practitioners in dealing with complicated pain/sedation management and opioid abuse issues. The ADA Practical Guide to Substance Use Disorders and Safe Prescribing also addresses regulations dentists must follow regarding the storage and recordkeeping of controlled substances.

Handling sick leave accruals as of Jan. 1
The new California sick leave law took effect on July 1, 2015, requiring nearly every employer in the state, including dentists, to allow all of its employees at least three paid sick days each year. The law provides that employees receive an hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Now that offices have policies in place, questions have arisen from dentists regarding how to handle sick leave accruals as of Jan. 1.
Holiday closure for CDA and affiliates
CDA, TDIC, TDIC Insurance Solutions and the CDA Foundation will close at 1 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2015, and remain closed through Jan. 1, 2016. To offset this closure, the association and its companies were open for business on certain holidays earlier this year.

Covered California dental enrollee numbers hit 60,000
The open enrollment period for health and dental coverage offered through Covered California, California's benefit marketplace created by the federal Affordable Care Act continues through Jan. 31. Since open enrollment began on Nov.1, more than 60,000 enrollees have selected dental coverage through Covered California's Family Dental Plans or California Covered for Small Business.

Dental board urges immediate action on license renewal
The Dental Board of California and the Department of Consumer Affairs have launched a campaign to reach dentists and registered dental assistants whose licenses expire in January 2016, and urge them to renew their professional licenses as soon as possible. This comes as a result of the transition to a new online licensure renewal system known as BreEZe.
