Thanks to the generosity of member dentists, nearly $100,000 was raised for the CDA Foundation and its programs at the CDA House of Delegates meeting. The money will go toward supporting future CDA Cares clinics and the Student Loan Repayment Grant program.
Emergency kit basics for dental practices

Some states may have more rigorous emergency kit requirements, and The Dentists Insurance Company advises dentists to check with their state dental board or dental association for specifics on what to include beyond ADA recommendations. TDIC advises all dentists to know when, how and in what dosages to administer drugs included in their emergency kits. Stocking emergency medications but lacking the training to administer them appropriately can be a liability.

Dr. James Stephens installed as new CDA president

James Stephens, DDS, was installed as the new CDA president at the House of Delegates meeting in Sacramento. Stephens, a general dentist with a private practice in Palo Alto, is a graduate of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and Stanford University. He succeeds Immediate Past President Lindsey Robinson, DDS.
CDA advises Covered California on health care implementation

CDA is working with Covered California staff to identify additional training that needs to be provided to the enrollment specialists to help them better support families in accessing the dental benefits that are available to them. In addition, CDA is providing feedback to Covered California on the short-term, and perhaps longer-term, fixes that need to be made to the website to ensure that families who want to buy the dental coverage through the portal can do so efficiently.

As a result of a recent announcement from the Dental Hygiene Committee of California (DHCC), licensed dentists and registered dental hygienists are each now required to provide specified public notification that they are licensed and regulated by the Dental Board of California and the DHCC, respectively.

New dentists can create and build great dental teams

New dentists must quickly learn how to, among other things, choose new hires and establish and support a productive team of energized, motivated employees. For some new dentists, conducting a job interview is uncharted and uncomfortable territory.
Taking steps to protect patient information under HIPAA

Recent Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) amendments to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) expanded patient rights with regard to their health information and added a breach notification rule for covered entities, such as dentists, to follow.
New privacy laws go into effect with New Year

Two new laws regarding data breach notification and information privacy go into effect with the New Year. The first, SB 46, expands the definition of “personal information” that triggers a data breach notification. The other, AB 370, requires disclosure of how a commercial website responds to “do not track” browser signals.
