Since the launch of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign in August, preliminary statistics show that the oral health literacy campaign sponsored by the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives is off to a good start.
Governor signs CDA-sponsored dental plan disclosure bill

CDA scored a significant victory in the dental benefits arena recently when Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation that will place new disclosure requirements on dental plans and insurers when they make material changes to their contracts, rules and procedures. The legislation takes effect Jan. 1, 2013.
Lab technicians play vital role at CDA Cares clinics

Steve Simon, owner of Professional Dental Laboratory in Sacramento, hadn’t volunteered at a large-scale health clinic before, but he said CDA Cares Sacramento was an event he couldn’t pass up. Simon, along with more than a dozen dental laboratory technicians, signed up to volunteer their skills at the free dental clinic in August. Simon has been a lab technician for more than four decades and currently serves as the president of the California Dental Laboratory Association. He took his experience and jumped in with both hands.

Despite strong lobbying from the ADA and other dental organizations, a 2.3 percent medical device excise tax is set to take effect on Jan. 1. Dentists should be aware, however, that the impact of the tax on dental practices is not entirely clear. The Internal Revenue Service has not yet published final regulations or provided guidance as to how it applies to dentistry. The tax may impact dental practices in the form of increased costs for purchasing supplies and equipment.
CDA Presents opens registration and reserved seating

To boost the attendee experience, CDA Presents has updated its online registration and overflow seating process, as well as its course lineup that now features an international flare. “For each program, we try to construct something that is unique and different,” said Chair of the CDA Presents Board of Managers Del Brunner, DDS.
Students appreciate having voice at House

Student delegates  representing the six dental schools across California participated in the 2012 CDA House of Delegates in Newport Beach this month. The opportunity to  have their voices heard on the issues that affect the profession as a voting delegation is something the students said they appreciate.
New CDA president puts advocacy at forefront

Lindsey Robinson, DDS, was installed as the new CDA president  this month at the House of Delegates meeting in Newport Beach. Robinson, a graduate of the Ostrow School of Dentistry of  USC, is a pediatric dentist practicing in Grass Valley. She succeeds Immediate  Past President Dan Davidson, DMD.

As of Nov. 28, dental practices are required to post a new notice to consumers. Business and Professions Code Section 138 requires the Dental Board of California, and other licensing boards within the state Department of Consumer Affairs, to require a licensee to post a notice that informs consumers that the licensee is regulated by the state.

Online dues renewal for CDA members is now available. Members can renew their dues in full at cda.org/member or enroll in the electronic dues payment program (EDP) and pay in equal monthly installments automatically deducted from a designated checking account.

Dentist impacts lives with help of Foundation

Recognizing a dedication to dentistry and a commitment to improving the oral health of Californians, the CDA Foundation recently selected its 13th Student Loan Repayment Grant recipient as Kongsab Hatlavongsa, DDS. The Student Loan Repayment Grant program exists to relieve new dentists of a portion of their debt in exchange for a three-year commitment to practice in an underserved community.
